Lord Vishnu was taken aback by King Mahabali's sacrifice and granted him the right to visit his country and people once a year on Onam.

The Preparations for Onam Sadya

Traditionally, women in the household prepare the Sadya, but men also contribute, especially in modern times. The preparations for Onam Sadya begin early in the morning on Thiruvonam, the primary day of the festival.

The Onam Sadya comprises of approximately 24 different dishes,  each with its own distinct flavour and preparation style. The foods are cooked using ancient ways, frequently passed down through generations, ensuring that the original taste of Onam is maintained.

The dishes are arranged in a specific order, starting from the top left of the banana leaf and moving clockwise. Each dish in the Onam Sadya is served in small portions, and the meal is eaten with the hands, which is considered an important aspect of the Onam experience. The sadya preparation begins one day in advance. The ingredients are carefully selected and placed. Then, after cutting the vegetables and fruits, prayers are offered to Agni Bhagavan. After the sadya is cooked, it is initially served to the deities.
